With the new Bond movie Spectre in theatres now all eyes are on 007’s latest car. Ever since Bond first graced the silver screen the car has most definitely been the star. The Bond movies have built a reputation for this with their renown for only using real cars in real stunts, leaving behind them in their wake a slew of totalled super cars. Whether it be the submersible submarine Lotus of For Your Eyes Only or the iconic Aston Martin DB5 of the Connery era, all eyes are on what car Bond will be driving next.
This time out we see Bond racing the Aston Martin DB10 around the streets of Rome. To celebrate the fifty year partnership between the deluxe sports car manufacturer and the James Bond movies Aston Martin have released the DB10. Designed, produced and hand crafted at the Gaydon headquarters under a cloak of utmost secrecy the company have released the new model exclusively for the film. A production run so exclusive the only ten in existence are the eight models used in the film and two show cars.
Working closely with Spectre’s director, Sam Mendes, the concept was to create a modernisation, or if you will, a translation of the iconic DB5. As such the DB10 echoes elements of earlier models, displaying Aston Martin’s elegant (almost effortless) design ethos. Although, the stronger, crisper creases and lines leading to the stockier back end bring the model into the twenty-first century while the front grille most certainly screams Aston Martin. Underneath, the DB10 is essentially a V8 Vantage except with a longer wheelbase than the V8 and a wider track, closer to that of a One-77. As expected it contains a mighty 4.7 V8 under the bonnet.
I’m sure you’ll agree, the chances of any of us leading that James Bond lifestyle any time soon are pretty slim. Although in this day and age there are alternatives. You may not be racing an Aston Martin around the streets of Rome any time soon but with a host of race circuits offering reasonably priced track days you can climb into a super car for that authentic 007 experience. And for all those who’ve dreamed of taking the house at the Casino Royale we can now come pretty close from the comfort of our own homes. Not many of us will be gracing the Baccarat tables of a Monte Carlo casino any time soon, but with sites such as Springbok Casino you can pour yourself a Martini (shaken not stirred) kick back and play any of of their variety of games which range from Roulette to Poker, Black Jack, Craps and even 007s personal favorite Baccarat. Plus, with the average price of an Aston Martin ranging into millions of Rand it’s no surprise that car enthusiasts will be looking for a cheaper alternative. In my book you can’t go far wrong with Mercedes new CLA-Class Coupé.
Building on the classic executive look of the coupé Mercedes have married and incorporated elements of the avant-garde and sporty design ethic, and with the race inspired interior with it’s sports seats, dynamism is high on the list of priorities. Also boasting top speeds of over 200 km/h and an impressive 0-100 in less than ten seconds, the range and it’s variety of models are hard to beat. Plus with the price range starting at R 407, 300 the consumer can experience that chic James Bond lifestyle with a lot less damage to the bank balance without sacrificing that sports car look and feel.
